Day 21: Don’t rain on my ride

24 01 2010

Rain sucks. If I recall correctly, it’s rained every day this week. EVERY DAY. Except yesterday when it was still cloudy, but an otherwise great day for a ride. Only I never had (or made) time to get on the bike and go. I thought today’s forecast called for another nice day, but I was rudely awakened in the wee hours of the morning by a thunderstorm. Weird for January, but a thunderstorm nevertheless.

Later in the morning when I got out of bed, I sulked while I read the newspaper, knowing I was being rained out of yet another bike ride. Yes, I know I should just put on a jacket and ride in the rain anyway, but I’m a bit of a wuss when it comes to riding in the rain. Besides, I’ve not yet gotten around to buying a good water-repellant jacket.

Carrick talked me into riding the stationary trainer while she rode on the bike rollers. I realized that would cut into my sulking time, but decided I really didn’t have any reason not to exercise. We set up our bikes in the living room in front of the TV — she did the rollers, I did the stationary trainer. We each listened to our own iPods and off we went. Thirty minutes, 5 miles and 180 calories later, I felt tired, but otherwise lifted out of my funk. Thanks Carrick, for a nice ride!
