Day 55: Bicycling Magazine needs a new look

27 02 2010

I’ve subscribed to Bicycling Magazine for quite a while. One thing I’ve noticed the past year or so is how similar the covers look from month to month. So much so, that when I receive a new issue in the mail, I look at it and think, “Didn’t I already read this one?” Each issue seems to feature a cyclist standing up on the pedals (either smiling or looking serious) while riding up a hill. Maybe this is the best way to have the model’s muscles stand out? Anyway, I think the magazine could take a tip from photography magazines. Some issues feature lenses on the cover one month, camera bodies another month, portraits or models another month, or some even feature various photography-related gadgets such as camera bags, tripods, external hard drives or other items. My point is, the photo magazines mix it up a bit. They don’t all look the same each month. I subscribe to 8 or 9 different photo magazines, but there always seems to be a good bit of variety between the issues. (See “American Photo” magazine back issues as an example.)

Now, don’t get me wrong – I love Bicycling magazine and I enjoy reading it each month. But they really to get a little more creative with their covers. Here’s a small sampling of my most recent issues that I’ve kept:

I’d be more concerned about that ugly white rectangle they keep printing on the mag 🙂
