Day 64: What’s in your food?

8 03 2010

I saw this frightening slideshow by Men’s Health magazine of what’s really in some of the common foods we eat. I have no doubt that there are far more pesticides, preservatives and by-products in our food than is good for us, but it’s still pretty horrifying to discover the amount of crap that’s in our food (and I’m sure there’s much more we don’t know about). I know my diet is far from perfect (I still have a lot of work to do in that area), but I do eat a lot of organic foods, whole grain pastas and breads and I haven’t eaten red meat in years. So I have made progress over the years.

It didn’t surprise me that McNuggets (or even Wendy’s “chicken” nuggets) aren’t really chicken, but I do wonder now if Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Sandwich is real chicken. I do enjoy those sandwiches. And I was disappointed to read the description of Builder Bars. I’ve found those to be the perfect energy boost on bike rides.

Our Daily Bread

Our Daily Bread

One of the most fascinating documentaries I’ve seen about food production is Our Daily Bread. The film focuses on the machinery and techniques used in food production. There is no dialog, no music. Only the sounds of the machinery and at times the animals. While it does show some slaughterhouse scenes, that’s not the main point of the film. As described on the film’s website, the film “. . . aims to show the industrial production of food as a reflection of our society’s values: plenty of everything, made as quickly and as efficiently as modern technology permits.” If you’ve not seen it, I highly recommend it.

Today’s starting weight: 150

Food journal:

— Chocolate, peanut butter, banana smoothie = 385 cal.

— Amy’s organic mac & cheese = 410
— Vitamin Water Zero = 0
— Fat free chocolate pudding cup = 60

— 1 small apple = 95
— 1 small bag Rold Gold pretzels = 230

— Amy’s organic cheese pizza (4 pieces) = 827
— Organic fat-free chocolate milk = 180

Thanks for visiting. See you tomorrow.

I don’t think those calories are right on that pizza . . . and if it is we should have just gone to Bearno’s 😉

Glad you noticed that, Carrick! I had it entered wrong in my LoseIt app. Thanks for helping me fix it. I wondered how I was 800 calories over my budget today. I was pretty good until the pizza. 🙂 Guess I could still do a lot better. My breakfast and dinners are still too high for calories. I need to cut back on those meals.
