Day 75: I can ride my bike again!

19 03 2010

FINALLY! I was cleared by my physical therapist today to ride my bike again! Well, sort of. Actually he told me to do a “test ride” and see how I feel. But that counts, right? The PT has not really healed my shoulder and while I have better range of motion than I did 10 weeks ago, I still have a good deal of pain. I’m strangely nervous about the ride tomorrow. Not that I plan on doing a very long ride. I just don’t want to do further damage and cause an even longer delay in my recovery. The therapist referred me back to my doctor next Tuesday to do more testing (probably an MRI). Depending on what the MRI finds depends on whether or not surgery will be required.

In the meantime, my shoulder has a strange pattern of Kenesio Tape on it, which I leave on until Monday. The therapist told me to avoid hills tomorrow and to do a fairly easy, flat ride. I won’t be doing 30 miles, but it’s supposed to be another beautiful, sunny day tomorrow, so I hope to get in a decent ride. I plan to follow the ride with the therapist’s strict instructions to do my stretches afterwards and to ice my shoulder. We’ll see whether the pain is worse or not after the ride. Even if it is, I’m just excited I can go for a ride again! I’m anxious to find out more information after seeing my doctor next week.

Have any of you had to deal with a rotator cuff injury? If so, did physical therapy help? Or did it require surgery? If so, did the surgery help? I’ve heard mixed reviews about the surgery.
