Day 87: Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution

31 03 2010

I’ve been watching “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution” show on ABC. I normally hate reality shows, but this one is a little different. In case you haven’t seen it, the reality show features British chef Jamie Oliver, who “invades” the town of Huntington, West Virginia to try to improve the town’s diet. He focuses particularly on an elementary school lunchroom and its employees. And they are NOT the warm-fuzzy “let’s show the British guy a nice warm welcome” kind of lunch ladies. One in particular, “Alice” is especially snarky and rude. I wouldn’t last one day with her before telling her where to stuff her mashed potatoes.

The entire town of Huntington is not shown in a favorable light, which of course adds to the appeal of the show, I’m sure. But in their defense, Jaime comes off as kind of an egotistical snob too, so he’s not completely blameless.

Anyway, it’s an interesting show. During one “test” Jamie get discouraged when schoolkids choose pizza over fresh veggies and a chicken breast.  How he’s going to succeed in getting the school and the entire town to start eating healthier foods is beyond me. Hell, presented with an option of fresh veggies and chicken versus pizza, even I would choose pizza! And that’s the reason why I’m 25 pounds overweight. I’m surprised how difficult it is to change my eating habits. I really do think quitting smoking 7 years ago was easier than sticking to a diet.

Tonight was a beautiful, sunny 75 degree evening, so after dinner I went for a short 4.5 mile bike ride around the neighborhood. I only burned 167 calories, but at least it’s 167 more than I would have burned sitting on my butt in front of the TV. My shoulder is feeling much better after the cortisone injection, so I’m hopeful I won’t have any more problems with it.

Today’s starting weight: 150

— Organic low-fat yogurt with ginger/vanilla organic granola = 390 cal.

— 3 small black bean soft tacos on flour tortillas = 508

— Salad with ranch dressing = 163
— Soft pretzel = 483
— Iced tea = 0

— 4.5 mile bike ride (20 minutes) = 167 calories burned

Life is a journey. Enjoy the ride!
