Day 95: How to make indoor training not suck

8 04 2010

I’ve discovered there are a few things that make for a successful ride on the stationary trainer: good TV (or a movie or music), plenty of water and an easy-to-reach remote control. I get bored quickly on the stationary trainer. The rollers keep me focused and I find it a more challenging workout. But I quickly lose enthusiasm when I use the stationary trainer.

Last Christmas, Carrick bought me one of the Bike-o-Vision cycling DVDs that includes video of “rides” through North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and other areas. A good way to pass the time training indoors (particularly when I’m riding the rollers).

We have various TV shows recorded on our DVR, so tonight I’ll be watching ABC’s “Flash Forward.” It’s one of my favorite shows and the complicated plot twists make the hour pass quickly. Perfect for a ride on the trainer. Fox’s “24” is another good one. And ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy.” I’m always a sucker for a medical show. And I could waste days watching “Law and Order” or “The Office.”

I’ve found that documentaries don’t always make for great viewing while training. A while back, I watched one of PBS’s “National Parks” episodes. I enjoyed the series, but it was too slow-moving for a training ride.

I also enjoy old TV shows such as “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “The Brady Bunch,” “Bewitched” and others from the 70’s. I guess I’m showing my age, aren’t I? And proving that I watch entirely too much TV. Hmmm . . .

What do you do while you’re on the indoor trainer? Music? TV? Movies? What are your favorites?
