Day 98: Comparison of iPhone Cycling apps

11 04 2010

I’ve tried a few different iPhone apps to track my cycling mileage, speed, etc. I have yet to find one to work reliably. I started with Cychosis. This one worked well, but it was not a GPS-enabled app. You have to enter your ride after you’re finished, which is good for tracking your miles, but I wanted an app that would record the ride real-time.

The next one I tried (and still use frequently) is iMapMyRide. This one seems to be mostly accurate when comparing the mileage with my cycle computer. It also works with the iPhone’s GPS, so it records my ride in real-time stats. I like the way the app is tied to the MapMyRide website, so once I finish a ride, I save the information, name the workout and can view the map and stats on the website or on my phone. Pretty cool stuff.

A while ago, I downloaded the Cyclemeter app.  I really like the interface on this app and my favorite part about the app is the ability to compete against your own previous rides to see if your rides are improving. My problem with the app is I can never get it to record a complete ride. Today, I used it on a 10 mile ride through my neighborhood. When I finished the ride, I compared the stats from the app with my cycle computer. The stats on Cyclemeter showed a 28 minute ride time (I rode for an hour), a distance of 1.61 miles (I did 10.5 miles) at 3.3 mph (I averaged 12 mph). Uh, I may be out of shape, but not that out of shape! A fellow photographer/cyclist I follow on Twitter also uses this app and it seems to work well for him. I can’t see anything I’m doing wrong, but I’m about to give up on it.

Do you use any iPhone apps to track your rides? If so, which one(s) do you use? I’d love to hear your feedback.
