Day 105: Video from Thunder Over Louisville

18 04 2010

A quick post tonight to include the video taken last night during the Thunder Over Louisville fireworks show. Sometimes I wish they wouldn’t play music during the show and would just let it be the sound of the fireworks and people’s excitement, but it’s still a great show.

I included information about Thunder in last night’s post. The Thunder website estimated there were over 700,000 people who attended the event yesterday. According to the Thunder website, in 2001, the Derby Festival conducted an economic impact study that determined Thunder Over Louisville generated more than $31 million for the local economy. To give an idea of the magnitude of the show, here is what the Thunder website said about the setup for the fireworks:

“To assemble a show the size of Thunder, Zambelli Internationale [pyrotechnics company] utilizes eight tractor trailers filled with nearly 60 tons of fireworks shells. The physical set-up includes 250 tons of launching tubes, some as high as 10 feet with a diameter of 1 and 1/2 feet. Two million pounds of sand will pack the firing tubes on 1,800 feet of barges. Almost 700 miles of wire cable connecting 20 firing boards are tied to the command post for synchronization to the music. This is the largest show the Zambellis perform each year and the Zambellis are the largest fireworks family in the world.”

I’m just glad we rode our bikes and didn’t have to deal with the traffic nightmares. Thanks to Bike Louisville who provided free secure bike valet parking for those who rode their bikes to the show. The bike club folks do a great job and their hard work is greatly appreciated.
