Day 109: Happy Earth Day

22 04 2010

While many people probably commuted to work today on their bikes for Earth Day, I didn’t. I’m still pretty nervous about the high-traffic areas I’d need to ride through on my 10-mile route, but I plan to attempt it one weekend soon to try finding an alternate route with less traffic. I did go for a nice leisurely ride through one of my favorite neighborhoods tonight after dinner. Azaleas and Dogwoods are in full bloom and many areas in town are beautiful! I plan to post some photos in the next few days assuming the predicted thunderstorms hold off.

In celebration of Earth Day, I thought I’d share a few interesting bike-related articles I read online today:

The Fender Blender – use pedal power to make smoothies and other blender treats. I’m thinking it would be a good to have at a party. People could take turns pedaling their butts off to blend up each batch of margaritas. And it would be a built-in sobriety test. Once you fall off the stationary bike, no more margaritas for you!

— NBC News Producer Adrienne Mong talks about why she hates China’s e-bikes.

1 World 2 Wheels, a pledge by Trek to make the world more bike-friendly. The idea is to calculate how many weekly car miles you can replace by using your bicycle. Then take the challenge to traveling by bike whenever possible. I know many of you readers already do this daily, but I’m still trying to get better at this. After so many years of driving everywhere, it’s a difficult habit to break. But I’m committed to doing better. And god knows I need the exercise.

In other news, I discovered some little troll stole my debit card number. Again. Last summer someone stole my credit card number and charged several hundred dollars worth of flowers and escort services. Nice, huh? So tonight I’ve filed a police report and will be doing my credit report check also. Not exactly the way I intended to spend the evening. I only have one word to say to the thief: “karma.”

Food journal:

Breakfast:
— Organic whole wheat english muffin with Nutella = 294 cal.

Lunch:
— Penn Station Dagwood sandwich (pepperoni, ham and cheese) = 546
— Iced tea = 0

Dinner:
— 3 pieces pizza = 676
— Iced tea = 0

Snack:
— Ice cream mini drumstick = 140

Exercise:
— 35-minute bike ride, 12.5 mph average, 6.7 miles = 290 cal. burned

Life is a journey. Enjoy the ride!

Just discovered your blog, its a great read so thanks for putting in the effort.

Regarding riding to work, high traffic areas can be very daunting, especially if your city is not very bike friendly. However as time goes on your confidence will grow and before long you will be commuting everyday and nothing will hold you back.

keep up the good blog and great efforts in cycling.

Cheers Craig

Thanks for visiting and for your comment, Craig. I’m getting pretty comfortable in around-town traffic now, but I’ve not been out riding in the area near where I work. I plan to take a ride out that direction one Saturday soon so I can see what the ride would be like during the week. Our city is pretty bike friendly (although it could always be better). Hopefully I’ll be ready to commute soon. I enjoyed reading your blog too. Looks like lots of good information, so I’ll be visiting again.
Take care and be careful out there.
Alice
