Day 121: Annoying Ice Cream Truck Music

4 05 2010

I took the day off from work today to take care of some personal business. It turned out to a perfect day to be off work. It was a sunny, blue-sky day with temperatures in the low 80s.

After I’d finished with the business I had to attend to, I went on a nice walk with the dog, then came home, changed into bike clothes and set out on a bike ride.

Instead of my usual neighborhood route, I rode downtown to Waterfront Park then wandered through downtown and back home. I’m getting much more comfortable riding in heavy traffic, so it’s paying off.

About a block from home, I waited at a traffic light. When the light changed, the car in front of me signaled (at the last minute) a left turn. After he turned, I rolled forward to proceed through the green light. The neighborhood ice cream truck which was facing me also pulled into the intersection. (Have I mentioned how irritating that damn ice cream truck music is?) Anyway, he had no left turn signal so I assumed he was going straight. Nope, he was turning left (glad I was paying attention.) So I motioned for him to go ahead and turn. He motioned for me to go straight. We were at a standstill for several seconds, but since I had the right of way, I proceeded through the intersection.

I can’t hold the confusion against the driver, though. Anyone who has to spend any length of time listening to “Pop Goes the Weasel” over and over and over again has to be a little rattled. Man, I hate that music!

The brief episode of traffic confusion reinforced a comment that Tim from An Old Guy on Two Wheels made the other day about confusion at four-way stops. When a cyclist appears in the four-way, sometimes drivers have no clue what to do. They don’t understand to treat us as another vehicle. If we all follow the traffic rules (cars and bikes alike), things would be so much more simple.

Today’s food journal:

— Chocolate mint Builder Bar = 270 cal.

— Turkey sandwich on wheat = 360
— Iced tea = 0

— Black bean nachos = 431
— Iced tea = 0

— Banana = 53
— Skinny Cow ice cream cup = 120

— 50 minute bike ride, 9.5 miles at 11.5 mph average. Average heart rate was 144. = burned 414 calories

Life is a journey. Enjoy the ride!
