Day 124: What Have I Done?

7 05 2010

It’s the day before the 100 Miles to Nowhere ride and I’m wondering what exactly I’ve gotten myself into. Part of me is excited to do the ride, while the other part of me is already exhausted and wishing I could sleep until noon tomorrow.

Our office at work relocated to another office in the hospital, so it’s been a marathon of lifting, carrying, moving and unpacking boxes and crates. Fortunately the moving company did all the hard, heavy work so that made it much easier, but it’s still been a tiring week.

As I mentioned the other day, I’ve not trained for the event like I had planned. To be honest, I’ve not trained at all. My farthest ride to date has been 35 miles, and that was last October. Carrick and I are each committing to doing 50 miles. If we can make it farther, even better. I plan to track my ride using either the MapMyRide iPhone app, or maybe the CycleMeter app. Although I’ve not had great luck with CycleMeter being very reliable. The battery in my iPhone will die before the ride is over I’m sure, so I’ll be keeping track of my mileage in a small notepad (just in case my cycle-computer malfunctions for some reason). Someday I plan to buy a Garmin, but they’re a bit pricey.

Tonight, we’re laying out our cycling gear (jerseys, shorts, shoes, socks, sunscreen, etc.), and checking tires, brakes and various parts. We’ve stocked the kitchen with Builder Bars, Vitamin Water 10 (and Zero), Smart Water, bananas, trail mix, and PB&J sandwiches. Since we live so close to the cemetery where we’re riding, it’ll make food breaks and bathroom breaks pretty simple and quick. My digital camera, iPhone and iPod are all charging up so hopefully they’ll last throughout the ride tomorrow. I’ll have my Flip Video also and I’m hoping to put together a short movie after the ride is over.

Rain and winds are moving through town tonight, so hopefully it will all be gone by tomorrow. It sounds like temps will be in the mid-60s tomorrow, so that should be perfect. I’m determined to make it at least 50 miles tomorrow. We’ll see what happens.

Today’s food journal:

Breakfast:
— Peanut butter Builder Bar = 270 cal.

Lunch:
— Jimmy John’s Slim Turkey sandwich = 401
— “Skinny” chips = 130
— Iced tea = 0

Dinner:
— 3 pieces of pepperoni pizza = 1015 (shut up, I’m carbo-loading. That’s my excuse, and I’m sticking to it.) 🙂
— Iced tea = 0

Snacks:
— Skinny Cow cookies & cream ice cream cup = 120

Life is a journey. Enjoy the ride.

50 miles will be a piece of cake . . . everything after that is frosting 😉

I agree! I think we’ll make it! At least it’ll be fun trying! And it’s for a good cause.
