Day 127: What Would You Do?

10 05 2010

We saw this segment about bike thieves the other night on ABC’s “What Would You Do?”

Various actors portray a bike thief, pretending to steal a chained up bike in a public park. The “thief” comes prepared with various tools such as a hacksaw, bolt cutters and other items. The point of the segment is to show how passers-by react to the theft-in-progress and to ask the show’s viewers “what would you do?”

The first actor is a white male. Some people don’t seem overly concerned about what he’s doing. Others do. Only one couple did anything to try to stop him.

The second actor is an African-American male. People walk by him, and within seconds people start questioning him. Many people are much more insistent and accusatory with their questions than the people who encountered the white man. One older man even starts yelling at him. Before long a small group of people converge.

The third actor is a white, blond-haired female. (This segment airs in the video after the commercial break.) While one woman calls the cops about the theft, one man falls for the “damsel in distress” and even helps her unchain the bike!

I don’t care what race someone is, their age or their gender, but if I walked by someone hacking at a locked up bike, I would certainly question them and would likely call the cops. I definitely would NOT help them steal it!

What would you do? Would you intervene? Does race, age or gender influence your decision?
