Day 140: Buy local first

23 05 2010

The Louisville Visual Art Association’s Buy Local 1st Fair was held at the Water Tower today from 2-6 p.m. We checked it out this afternoon and there seemed to be a good crowd and quite a few vendors. A variety of local musicians, artists, businesses, community organizers, chefs and farmers provided came together to show Louisville’s offerings of homegrown agriculture, art and cultural products.

I didn’t see any bike vendors, but I guess any bike shop is technically a “local” bike shop, isn’t it? Unless of course people purchase bikes from retail chains such as Dick’s Sporting Goods, Kmart or Walmart. But it seems most retail chains usually only offer mountain bikes or cruisers. (I bought T-Rex, my dinosaur mountain bike at Dick’s years ago.) I never shop at Walmart, but I heard they now sell a few road bikes and a single-speed bike. It made me wonder how many people buy their bikes at retail chains versus a local bike shop.

It was a hot, sticky day today, but I got some yard work done and managed to get in an 8-mile bike ride before it got too hot. Overall it’s been a nice weekend.

Today’s food journal:
