Day 143: “Bicycles: Love Poems”

26 05 2010

Despite being an English major in college, I never learned to appreciate poetry. Literature, yes. Poetry? Not so much. I always figured it was an acquired taste – much like beer. Carrick checked out a book for me today at the library that she said caught her eye. “Bicycles: Love Poems” by Nikki Giovanni, the University Distinguished Professor of English at Virginia Tech who holds the Langston Hughes Medal for Outstanding Poetry, among other honors. The book is a 109-page collection of poems about love in various forms: the emotional attachment, the physical touch, and losses the poet has experienced (the death of her mother and a sister). The editorial review by Booklist on Amazon.com states, “Disarming, sly, sensual, and knowing, Giovanni’s poems scan like the teasing and wise songs favored by Dinah Washington and Etta James.”

The book begins with her reflection on the Virginia Tech massacre in 2006. The introductory page reads, “Bicycles: because love requires trust and balance.”

To quote a section from her poem titled “Bicycles:”

“. . . Bicycles move
With the flow
Of the earth
Like a cloud
So quiet
In the October sky
Like licking ice cream
From a cone
Like knowing you
Will always
Be there. . . ”

I’ve not read any of her poetry before, but I’m looking forward to reading this book.

I’m going to have to look this up – thanks for the post! I’m doing my bit to bring bicycles and poetry together on my blog: current project is a poem-a-day for the duration of the Tour. Which, it turns out, is almost as hard as the Tour itself..! Really admire both your blog, and what you’re doing. Pedal on.

Great idea combining poetry and cycling. Nicely done blog, by the way. I’ll be visiting again. Take care.
