Day 148: Mayor’s Hike and Bike summary

I’m happy to say the weather cooperated today for the Mayor’s Hike and Bike. It was warm and humid, but at least it didn’t rain. I haven’t seen the estimate yet for today’s crowd size, but according to the Kentuckiana Regional Planning and Development Agency, around 5,000 people participate in the Hike and Bike events.

The 15-mile cycling route started downtown at Waterfront Park and continued out South Third Street to Iroquois Park and back. Louisville Metro Police blocked side streets so it was nice to be able to ride the entire route without having to stop for traffic lights.

I always like this event because it brings out so many people – beginners, newbie riders and experienced riders. Young, old and in-between. Everyone seems to have a good time. Volunteers are kind enough to stand out in the sweltering heat and provide water to thirsty riders. And I love that we live close enough to downtown that we can ride our bikes to events like this without having to put our bikes on the car rack and then deal with finding a parking place in the large crowds. (Parking makes me really cranky.)

Round-trip we rode 23 miles. We rode for about 2:15 hours and burned 798 calories. Yay! 

I hope everyone is having a great Memorial Day. I could get used to this three-day weekend thing.

Breakfast:

Snack (during ride):

— 1/2 Chocolate Mint Builder Bar = 135 

Lunch:
— Turkey sandwich on hoagie bun with bacon and provolone cheese = 694 (est.)
— Iced tea = 0
— French fries = 200 (est.) 

Dinner:
— Lean Cuisine Fettucini Alfredo = 330 

Snack:
— Weight Watchers cookies & cream ice cream = 130
