Day 164: Bicycle friendly states

The League of American Bicyclists announced their annual ranking of Bicycle Friendly States. All 50 states were scored on responses to questionnaires evaluating each state’s commitment to bicycling. The questionnaire covered the following areas:

— Enforcement
— Legislation
— Policies and programs
— Infrastructure
— Education and encouragement
— Evaluation and planning

Kentucky scored 22 out of 50. The category grades for Kentucky were:

— Enforcement: A
— Legislation: B
— Policies and programs: B
— Infrastructure: D
— Education & Encouragement: D
— Evaluation & Planning: D

The top 5 states in the study:

1. Washington
2. Wisconsin
3. Maine
4. Minnesota
5. Oregon

The bottom 5 states:

46. New Mexico
47. West Virginia
48. Montana
49. North Dakota
50. Alabama

How did your state score? Here’s a comparison of each state’s ranking for 2008, ’09 and ’10.

Today’s food journal:

Breakfast:
— Pumpkin muffin = 530 cal.
— Peach smoothie = 260

Lunch:
— Grilled cheese sandwich on whole wheat = 431
— Potato chips (about 1/2 cup) = 60
— Diet Coke = 0

Dinner:
— Nothing good for me. We ate at a local restaurant (surprise) where I ate “potato puffs” – fried globs of mashed potatoes. Tasty, but totally bad for me.
