Day 212: Weight Watchers – week 1

In my pursuit of losing weight, I’ve discovered I don’t seem to have the willpower to do it on my own. Last week I joined Weight Watchers. Meetings are held each week at work and the membership cost for the 17-week program is deducted from payroll so I really don’t have an excuse not to try it.

Day one was the day before my week-long beach vacation. Not exactly a great time to start a diet, but I did the best I could while I was on vacation. It was actually nice to be out of my normal routine of eating out for lunch and dinner each day, which I know has to stop.

I have a daily points allowance of 20. Until today, I’ve had a bit of a tough time not going over my limit. The day before I started the program, I ate my “normal” meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner and tracked my points just to see how many I had that day. I had a smoothie for breakfast, a turkey sandwich for lunch and three pieces of pepperoni pizza for dinner. Total points for the day? 53! Granted, I don’t each pizza for dinner every day, but it’s probably once a week. Tracking my normal behavior really put into perspective how quickly things add up.

The rest of the week I was much closer to my 20 points, but I still went over by several points. Today was a great day. My first day staying within the 20 points! I fixed a Weight Watchers smoothie (recipe below) for breakfast, a spinach salad with a veggie chicken patty, half an apple and light salad dressing for lunch. Dinner was a grilled chicken sandwich at a local restaurant. I asked the waitress for just the sandwich and no fries, but the silly woman put fries on my plate despite my request. I managed not to eat any of the fries — a huge step for me.

Tomorrow I look forward to another day of being good. Thursday is weigh-in/meeting day, so I hope I see at least some weight lost. I’m still working on to getting better at exercising each day, but one step at a time, right?

Here’s the Blackberry-Peach Smoothie recipe from Weight Watchers:

— 3/4 cup ice cubes
— 2 medium peaches, peeled, pitted and quartered
— 1/4 cup blackberries
— 1/2 cup fat free milk

Place ice in blender container; add peaches, blackberries, and milk.
Blend on high until smooth and ice is completely crushed, about 3 to 4 minutes. Yields 1 serving.

Points: 2

Today’s food journal:

Breakfast:
— Weight Watchers Blackberry-Peach Smoothie = 2 points

Lunch:
— Spinach salad with Light Lime dressing, Morningstar Farms veggie chicken patty and 1/2 an apple = 5.5 points
— Diet Coke = 0 points

Dinner:
— Grilled chicken breast sandwich = 9 points
— Iced tea = 0 points

Snack:
— 1 cup Cool Whip with Hershey’s syrup = 4 points
