Day 215: Ben Sollee’s cello/bicycle tour

Lexington musician Ben Sollee begins a six-week national tour Aug. 18. What does this have to do with cycling, you ask? Sollee plans to do all the traveling by bicycle. Sollee and his drummer will start the 20-show tour by flying to San Diego, then cycle across the country and end the tour in Frankfort, KY.

Last year, Sollee strapped his cello to his bicycle and traveled from Lexington to Tennessee for the Bonnaroo festival, playing small towns along the way. A few months later his winter tour involved a 500-mile route between North Carolina and Florida. Here’s a good video from his 2009 tour: (thanks to SuckPress for not allowing me to embed Vimeo videos). I was curious what kind of bike he uses. It looked like a Surly Big Dummy, but it turns out it’s an Xtracycle and he talks about it in the video (which also includes some nice footage of the Kentucky scenery.)

I’m not terribly familiar with his music, but I may have to go check him out in Frankfort since it’s about 40 minutes down the highway. But then, would that make me a hypocrite to drive a car to see a concert by an environmentally-friendly-musician-cyclist who pedaled across the country with his cello? Hmm….

Someday, I plan to learn to play my cello that I bought from a friend about 20 years ago. I expect though, I’ll never be hauling it anywhere on my bike. Those suckers are heavy and awkward!

This year his tour is sponsored by Kentucky’s Coffeetree Cafe, the League of American Bicyclists and Adventure Cycling. More information about Sollee’s bike touring is available at his website

Today’s food journal:

lets ride our bikes down there – completely doable (might sleep through the concert – but we could do it 😉
