Day 242: Bicycling.com’s bike maintenance videos

2 09 2010

I make a regular habit of cleaning our bikes to get rid of road grime and schmutz, but after our ride on Sunday morning, I realized mine was pretty filthy. The chain was horribly gunky and I noticed the gears were not shifting as smoothly as normal. I took both bikes outside and saturated myself with bug spray to ward off the mosquitos. After scrubbing my bike chain with degreaser, it occurred to me that I may be using too much lube on the chain after I’ve cleaned it. I always wipe off the excess, but I really have no idea how much lube to use. It seemed particularly oily this time. I made a mental note to search online for tips on proper chain cleaning. And then I promptly forgot. Until today.

I received an email from Bicycling.com referring to a section of their website containing “how-to” videos on various types of bike maintenance and repairs: everything from wrapping handlebar tape, adjusting cleat tension and truing wheels to … yep — cleaning and lubing a chain. Perfect! I’ve now learned that yes, I am overdoing it with the chain lube. No wonder it gets so grimy after only a few rides. Now I know.

So if you need tips on bike maintenance or repairs, be sure to check out this section of Bicycling’s website. Oddly, though I didn’t see a video on how to change a tire in under two hours. 😉 I really need to work on that. I’ve not done it often enough to be able to do it quickly (the only flat I’ve had was in the house after riding the trainer). Outside I’m pretty sure mosquitos would chew me into a messy pulp before I could finish.

Today’s food journal:
It was weigh-in day at Weight Watchers today. I lost 1.2 pounds and have now lost 5.2 pounds total. I’m hoping for another 5 pounds in the next few weeks and that’ll get me about half way to my goal.

Breakfast:
— Whole wheat english muffin = 1 point
— 1 Tbsp peanut butter = 2 points

Lunch:
— Spinach salad = 0 points
— 1/2 small apple = .5 points
— Veggie chicken patty = 3 points
— Light Lime salad dressing = 2 points
— Diet Coke = 0 points

Dinner:
— Turkey sub sandwich = 5.5 points
— Iced tea = 0 points

Life’s a journey. Enjoy the ride!
