Day 256: Additional bike racks coming to downtown Louisville

16 09 2010

Hundreds of bike parking spaces are coming to downtown Louisville, thanks to Metro Louisville. The spaces will be within a 10- or 15-minute walk from the new downtown arena. According to local blog, Broken Sidewalk:

“Dirk Gowin, Transportation Planning Administrator with Bike Louisville, says the city plans to add a total of 262 new bike parking spaces within a ten minute walk of the arena and 46 more within a 15-minute walk.  These 308 new spaces will bring the total number of bike parking spots within a 15-minute walk of the arena to 630.”

The racks will be installed inside garages around downtown. By installing the bike racks in parking garages, Bike Louisville hopes to increase the convenience and security of bike parking. Here’s a diagram of the planned locations.

The original plan was to have the bike racks installed prior to the opening of the arena (which is scheduled for Oct. 10). However the Parking Authority of River City (PARC) decided the green racks originally purchased would clash with the blue signs PARC uses for parking signs. Whatever. The good news is that the green racks won’t go to waste, but will be used in other locations throughout downtown. There are several places I can think of that could use some of the “leftover” racks:

— Near the Belvedere at Main and 4th and 5th Streets
— Louisville Free Public Library on 3rd and York streets
Louisville Science Center on 7th and Main
Waterfront Park (near the restrooms)
Louisville Extreme Park at Clay and Franklin streets
Ali Center at N. 6th Street

Those are the first areas that come to mind that could use some more bike parking. Thanks, Bike Louisville and PARC for the new bike racks!

Today’s food journal:

— Chocolate, peanut butter, banana smoothie = 6.5 points

— Turkey sandwich on whole wheat = 5.5 points
— 1 pkg. Rold Gold pretzels = 4 points
— Diet Coke = 0 points

— Grilled chicken sandwich = 4.5 points
— Iced tea = 0 points

Life’s a journey. Enjoy the ride!
