Day 304: How bike-friendly is Louisville’s New Mayor?

3 11 2010

Now that the mid-term elections are over and Louisville has a new mayor (Greg Fischer), I’m more than a little curious to see what’s going to happen. Not only in general, but also with whether or not he will be supportive of the cycling community. Mayor Abramson was active in events and projects which supported the cycling community — the Louisville Loop expansion, Eva Bandman Cyclocross Park and the bi-annual Hike & Bike events, just to name a few. I can’t help but wonder whether Fischer is going to be as involved with things like that. I guess time will tell.

Today’s food journal:

Breakfast:
— Whole wheat english muffin with peanut butter = 3 points
— 1/2 glass LF chocolate milk = 1.5 points

Lunch:
— Power Bar = 3 points (I was busy and forgot to eat – that doesn’t happen often.)

Dinner:
— Soft pretzel = 10 points
— Iced tea = 0 points

Snack:
— Skinny Cow ice cream bar = 2 points

Life’s a journey. Enjoy the ride!

I have heard from some friends who worked with Greg Fischer’s campaign, and who consider him open to cycle-friendly topics. He “gets it,” at least at some level, that utility bicycling is part of the overall transit plan (of course, the club riders are going to do what they do regardless).

I know Hal Heiner, and was quite disappointed at his “performance” at the Louisville Bicycle Club’s Mayoral Forum in April.

I don’t think we had a really good candidate, but Fischer is the best of what we had.

That’s good to know about Fischer. I remember he was unable to attend the Mayoral Forum due to a schedule conflict, but I’m hopeful he’ll be supportive of the community. And I agree that Fischer was probably the best of the two options. It’ll be interesting to see what happens in the next few years.
