Day 311: Park Tool School – Day 2 of 4

10 11 2010

Tonight’s Park Tool School covered lots of good stuff:

  • Wheel Truing which included lateral and radial truing; wheel centering; spoke tension; replacing broken/damaged spokes and wheel wear, repair and damage.
  • Pedals which included pedal removal and installation; damage to crank pedal threads; and how to service the pedal bearings.
  • Cranksets: crank removal and installation; bottom bracket removal and installation; and chainring wear and damage.
  • Chains: chain sizing; chain with “Master-link”; new chain installation; link repair; chain sizing and tension adjustment; and chain wear, damage, cleaning and lubrication.

I think in Monday’s class we’ll learn about handlebars, stems, derailleur systems and internal gear systems. Some of the things we’re learning are things I don’t expect to have to do very often, but I feel like I’d at least be comfortable enough trying various maintenance tasks whenever the need arises. If I screw it up, then I’ll take it to the shop.

Today’s food journal:

Breakfast:
— Organic LF yogurt with granola = 5 points

Lunch:
— Wendy’s spicy chicken sandwich = 8 points
— Iced tea = 0 points

Dinner:
— Soft pretzel = 10 points

Snack:
— Skinny Cow ice cream bar = 2 points
— 1/2 of 3 Musketeers candy bar = 2 points

Life’s a journey. Enjoy the ride!
