Day 300: Happy National Candy Corn Day!

30 10 2010

Never send two adults on diets to the grocery store to buy Halloween candy. Everything looks good. Candy Corn is our favorite. I can eat my weight in that crap, but honestly I have a hard time saying “no” to most any candy. Except Necco Wafers. Does anyone really like those things? What the hell are they, anyway? Our friend Marcy once did a mosaic picture of Elvis/Jesus made out of Necco Wafers. One of the best uses for Necco Wafers I’ve ever seen.

In years past for Halloween, Carrick and I would end up buying some brand of candy that we tell ourselves we don’t really like, but by the end of Halloween night, we’d end up eating as much of the candy as we handed out to Trick-or-Treaters. Here are some miscellaneous facts about Halloween candy that I thought was worth sharing:

  • According to the National Confectioners Association (NCA), today (Oct 30) is National Candy Corn Day.
  • More than 35 million pounds (9 billion pieces) of candy corn was produced in 2009. (Source: NCA)
  • Weight Watchers states that 26 pieces of candy corn are worth 3 points. Not quite as bad for me as I expected. And a whole lot fewer points that many other types of candy.
  • 90% of parents admit to sneaking goodies from their kids’ Halloween trick-or-treat bags. (Source: NCA) We don’t have kids, but co-workers in my office always bring their kids’ leftovers to work on Monday. I plan to be prepared with healthy snacks this year so I don’t eat the candy.
  • More fun facts about Halloween are available here.

So with apologies to the neighborhood kids this year, here’s what we bought at the store tonight in preparation for tomorrow night’s Trick-or-Treaters:

Scarrots with glow-in-the-dark tattoos!

I can hear the Trick-or-Treaters’ comments now: “Skip that house – they give you carrots! Who wants carrots on Halloween?!” Did I mention the package includes glow-in-the-dark tattoos?

Today’s food journal:

Breakfast:
— Whole wheat english muffin with SF strawberry jam = 2 points
— 1 cup LF chocolate milk = 3 points

Lunch:
— 2 black bean soft tacos (Qdoba) = 5.5 point
— Iced tea = 0 points

Dinner: (We’ve been craving good, greasy pizza for about 3 weeks. Tonight we took the advice of my Weight Watchers leader and ordered what we wanted to satisfy our craving. Guess I should’ve looked up the points first. It ended up being an entire day’s worth. But man, it was yummy.)
— 4 pieces pepperoni pizza = 18.5 points
— Iced tea = 0 points

Snack:
— Skinny Cow ice cream bar = 2 points

Life’s a journey. Enjoy the ride!
